Blob Opera is an experimental interactive music tool created by artist David Li in collaboration with Google Arts & Culture. It allows users to compose and perform opera-style music using cute, blobby, cartoonish characters. These characters represent different vocal parts, and users can control their pitch and vowel sounds to create harmonized opera music. The experience is both a fun introduction to music composition and a playful exploration of harmony.
The game features four vocal parts—soprano, alto, tenor, and bass—represented by colorful blobs. Each blob sings a specific vocal range:
Soprano (high voice)
Alto (medium-high voice)
Tenor (medium-low voice)
Bass (low voice)
Players manipulate each blob by clicking and dragging:
Dragging vertically changes the pitch (higher or lower notes).
Dragging horizontally changes the vowel sounds (from more closed to more open sounds). The other blobs automatically harmonize with the note played, making it easy for anyone to create beautiful, harmonic opera performances without needing prior musical knowledge.
Players start by interacting with the four blobs on the screen. The gameplay involves selecting and moving blobs to create different vocal sounds. As the blobs harmonize, users can experiment with various combinations of notes, pitches, and sounds. Blob Opera doesn’t require a structured goal or objective, making it a casual and creative experience. However, users can share their compositions or play around endlessly with the satisfying audio and visual feedback.
